The SIU School of Medicine annual Department of Surgery Teaching Awards were presented on August 8th. The awards are held to recognize the entire Department of Surgery faculty and are from General Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Neurosurgery. Award recipients are chosen based upon the evaluations submitted by the residents about the faculty and are based on the numbers but more importantly, on the comments made by the residents.
The Faculty Teacher of the Year award went to Gordon Allan, MD.
Comments from Dr. Allan’s nominations for the Faculty Teacher of the Year:
“Brought back a culture and atmosphere in the program that has been missing for some time.”
“In spite of a complex caseload, is able to tailor operative experience to the resident skill set. He has been a surgical educator for almost 30 years and it shows. This rotation really made a big difference for me in how I approached my responsibilities as a resident.”
“He is an excellent educator and surgeon. He deserves a medal even if he is Canadian…”
The Outstanding Surgical Educator chosen from the Community Surgeons was Leo Ludwig MD.
Comments from Dr. Ludwig’s nominations for the Outstanding Surgical Educator:
“Excellent teacher & role model, we all fight over the opportunity to work with him.”
“Creates a great learning environment and sets a wonderful example of patient-physician interaction in the clinic setting. When he retires, he will be missed!”
“Always a fantastic, education rotation, allows for supervised autonomy in the OR, with real-time feedback and suggestions on improvements.”
Also recognized for their high recommendations from residents were Dr. Romanelli and Dr. Williams.
